Into Your Arms…I Will Go.
Being the insomniac I am I was perusing the internet and got sucked into Last.fm. I started watching some music videos and stumbled upon “All Apologies” by Nirvana. What an amazingly great song it is, don’t ya think? It really takes me back to being a little gal of 10 years old. Fifth grade before the angst really set in. I of course “discovered” Nirvana through my older sister. She was in 8th grade and LOVED this band. I can still remember the afternoon when I was sitting in my math class and the cute skater boy had this adorable beat up looking tote and written in sharpie on the ribbon across the front was the word NIRVANA. I remember thinking, “Hey! Awesome! He knows who Nirvana is!” He too had older siblings who were in the know with the cool music.
I think my music obsession started right around that age. 10 years old. My first music purchase was the soundtrack to “The Lion King.” Haha…and prolly less than a year later “The Cranberries.” Both on vintage tape. How funny to see that transition from childhood to pre-teen. In my family music is a pretty big part of our lives. We like to jam out. Some of my favorite childhood memories were when my sisters and I would rock out to the music videos on The Box in our den. Current playlist of the time was Annie Lennox-“Little Bird”, The Cranberries-“Zombie,” Shakespears Sister-“I don’t Care” gosh and all kinds of awesomeness. We were so far out in the country that we didn’t have cable yet so we didn’t get to watch MTV. One of the first times I watched MTV was on a family trip to Carlsbad Caverns. All four of us girls shared a hotel room and watched MTV nonstop. Haha…it was grand. The music videos on current rotation were Four Non-Blondes, that Runaway Train song and this other random music video that had mermaids and like a fish tank. Oh, and we also watched lots of Beavis and Butthead.
My other sister was also on some kind of music video “book club” list type thing. And she got these 3 amazing VHS’s with music videos. They were rock awesome. They had The Lemonheads, Blur and all kinds of sweet ass music.
So here’s to you music, a little ode to the awesome that is you. I raise my imaginary goblet of wine to you. Cheers!
